What Does A Vet Tech Do

So, what does a vet tech do? Well, before we get into that you should know that the job of a vet tech is one that provides a certain measure of job security. Someone looking to give a short sarcastic answer would say “well, whatever the veterinarian wants you to do”, within the boundaries of decency of course. But in reality a vet tech has plenty of duties and tasks to perform in the workplace. In this article we will inform you of what some of those things are.

First of all, the resident veterinarian(s) have many complicated matters they need to attend to and here is where the vet tech comes in handy. To answer your “what does a vet tech do” question here goes. The vet tech will make sure that physical exams of the animals brought in for checkups are routed properly. They will also assist and/or perform dental exams and other related procedures on the pets.

They will assist and maybe even perform spaying and neutering of pets as needed. They will conduct preventative treatments and administer vaccinations and immunizations. And perhaps some of the most important and sometimes difficult acts they will be involved in will be procedures relating to birth and on the other end of the extreme sometimes even euthanasia.

But for the most part a vet tech’s duties will consist of things such as taking samples and specimens from animals that will then be looked at for any abnormal conditions or diseases that may be present in the pets. This will most often be done by gathering urine samples, blood and sometimes skin and/or fur also. The results of these tests are usually rendered on-site but there are occasionally instances where it may be done off of the premises.

And once the results have come back or in, the vet tech is then going to make a record of the information received and make sure it is filed and routed properly. The vet tech will also often take care of routine pet treatments such as tending to minor wounds and applying medications. And lastly, the vet tech will also be assigned with the task of having the animal as relaxed and calm as can be before they are dealt with by the resident veterinarian.
